Top show at 'The Lexington' in Islington last night. There was great support from 'Untitled Musical Project', playing their last ever gig, and confounding their demise by playing a bunch of new songs... The Victorian English Gentlemens Club then played their first London gig for about a year and a half, and only the third ever with the new line up. Adam and Louise are still there on guitar and bass; and are joined by new veggies Dan on drums and Steph on guitars. First impressions? Well, it's like watching a new band. Only 'Backwards' & 'Gin' survive the setlist from the stunning debut album, and although old fans will have seen some of the rest of the setlist before, the delivery is radically different. There is still 'B-52's' style bonkers vocal interplay from all members, jaggedly off-kilter guitar work and lead vocals from Adam, and marching/stares from Louise; but it IS a different band since the departure of Emma. Not that this is entirely a bad thing, but it will take a few gigs to get used to. The high percentage of brand new material kept the crowd a bit more subdued than usual, but the high quality of most of it gives encouragement that familiarity will lead to better and better gigs. New single 'Parrot' and new song 'Periscope' particularly stood out for me as future live favourites. I have seen the band a fair few times now, and this was a good performance. I am sure that with a few more gigs there could well be a great one to come.
